Liran’ Roll: The Voice of Mexico’s Urban Rock
History
Liran’ Roll, also known as Lira N’ Roll or Lira N Roll, is a legendary Mexican urban rock band formed in Mexico City in 1991.
The group was founded by Antonio Lira, who had previously been part of Blues Boys. After leaving that band, he joined Power Blues along with Antonio Velázquez (guitar), José Luis Rosas (drums), and Édgar Cruz (bass and vocals).
Their talent earned them recognition after winning the contest “Rock en la selva de asfalto” (“Rock in the Asphalt Jungle”), and soon after, they officially adopted the name Lira N’ Roll.
Their debut album, Quiero Cambiar (“I Want to Change”), was released in 1991 under the Discos y Cintas Denver label.
That same year, they released María, featuring the hit single of the same name — a song that became one of the most beloved anthems of Mexican rock and brought them national radio and television exposure.
In 1992, bassist Hugo Mendoza joined the band, along with guest musicians such as Isidoro Negrete (harmonica) and Arturo Labastida (saxophone).
The original lineup performed together for the last time on December 28, 1998. Years later, in 2009, Liran’ Roll announced their departure from Discos y Cintas Denver, marking the beginning of a new independent chapter in their career.
Musical Style
Liran’ Roll’s sound is a fusion of blues, hard rock, and Mexican urban rock.
Their lyrics explore themes of everyday life in the outskirts of the city, love and heartbreak, social struggles, and personal resilience.
The band’s music captures the essence of Mexico’s working-class neighborhoods — poetic, raw, and authentic. Despite mainstream trends, they’ve built and maintained a loyal fan base for over three decades, performing in state fairs, arenas, and rock festivals throughout the country.
