Crystal Castles

Crystal Castles was a Canadian witch house duo formed in 2006 by producer Ethan Kath and singer Alice Glass, who later left the band and was replaced by Edith Frances.

Their name comes from a commercial for She-Ra's castle, which stated, "The crystal castle is the source of all power." They formed in 2004 at the initiative of programmer Ethan Kath, when he discovered Alice in a studio while she was recording for a punk band.

In 2005, Alice recorded several of these tracks, resulting in "Alice Practice," the first single. Recorded by the engineer, it became the band's first hit. The single was released on a limited 7" vinyl edition on London's Merok Records, which took three days to complete. Several more singles came out on limited 7" vinyl editions until the self-titled album was released. NME magazine ranked them #39 on its "Top 50 Greatest Albums of the Decade."

In mid-2008, Crystal Castles were involved in two controversies. Pitchfork Media and the Torontoist blog published stories about Crystal Castles using Trevor Brown's work without permission, although the band later provided screenshots of an email exchange showing permission had actually been granted.

In october 2014,via a facebook post, Alice Glass announcend her departure from Crystal Castles. The statement read:

"My art and self-expression in any form has always been an attempt toward sincerity, honesty, and empathy for others. For a multitude of reasons, both professional and personal, I no longer feel this is possible within Crystal Castles. Although this is the end of the band, I hope my fans will embrace me as a solo artist in the same way they have embraced me in Crystal Castles."

Immediately following this announcement, Crystal Castles' manager announced that the band would continue.
